Send good vibes to a bass brother, etc.
I heard Oteil was in a motorcycle accident.
Here's the text from the
email:Our darling Brother Oteil
was involved in a minor traffic accident yesterday (3/29) and was admitted to
the University of Alabama/Birmingham hospital. Oteil underwent minor treatment
to clean out wounds to his leg and is recovering nicely. The slow-speed accident
occurred in his Birmingham hometown when his Triumph motorcycle accidentally hit
an automobile. Oteil, who was wearing his helmet, is expected to recover in time
for his show with the Peacemakers April 8 in Copper Mt., CO and the next Allman
Brothers Band and Oteil & The Peacemakers concerts at the Wanee Festival
April 14 & 15 in Florida. His performance tonight with the Peacemakers at
the Savannah Music Festival has been cancelled, but dates in April, May and over
the summer with both the Allman Brothers Band and the Peacemakers will not be
affected. Man, guys in that band
have had enough problems with motorcycles. Glad Oteil's okay though. Here's a
picture I took the first time I met him at NAMM 2005, with Tal Wilkenfeld and
Mike Pope in the background.
I told him I really enjoyed the music he
makes and he seemed really gratified. I bet he hears that all the time, but he
doesn't seem to be all arrogant about it. That's pretty cool. His arrangement
and performance of "Doxology" is still one of the most moving pieces of music
I've heard. Anyway, best wishes to the guy for a speedy and uncomplicated
recovery. We need him on this side so he can keep making that
music! In other news, I should be
getting a new bass pretty soon. I'm waiting for one of the last Reverend
Rumblefish basses. The bass I purchased was a 5 string in faux blue wood
finish.
I guess they decided to discontinue the
basses because they weren't cost-effective. It's pretty easy to see why. It
must be pretty tough to make much profit on a high quality USA-made five string
bass that's selling in the low four digits. This will be my fourth or fifth
Reverend bass and all of them have been great. Glad to have found one, and at a
super price. Did you know that Victor
Conte, who's currently involved in the Barry Bonds steroid scandal, was a bass
player for Tower of Power at one time?
